bispengbuen event wagons

Fall 2012

A highway underpass in northern Copenhagen known as Bispengbuen is a large, unlit, and unused space that cuts through an urban neighborhood. The community has made attempts at taking back this space, and each organizes three main events: Bass (a rave concert), Flea and Swap (a community market), and Feed and Seed (a food festival). In order to help facilitate these events and more, students were assigned to create a spatial system “under the bridge.”

Inspired by food truck vendors which open and arrive by day and close by night in the city, I envisioned a series of Event Wagons that would provide a versatile platform for whatever the inhabitants needed. These wagons could be stowed at one end of the site when unused, and open up in a variety of ways to serve as booths, exhibitions, bars, lounges, stages, or vendors. In addition, each wagon acts like a “mothership,” with the ability to store 6 folding tables in the base. Event participants can share the rent for one wagon, and each use one or two tables arrayed around it to capture more space. The tables are also dimensioned to fit inside of the wagons, to create a vendor or bar setup.
