SPIRAL STAND

Spring 2012

In a semester long furniture design project, students were assigned to produce a stand of a 20 inch height that expressed the formal construction quality of "stick," "stack," or "plane." Students were also limited to a single unfinished board of poplar as their material from which all pieces had to be cut. I was put into the stick category, and began by exploring the possibilities of creating a spiral with straight joinery. Exposing the joinery was a key design decision, as was the extension of the support posts to elevate the spiral. All pieces not associated with the spiral were made as skinny as possible so that they would appear secondary.
